Libidinal PHASES of Oedipal Complex Development
PHASE Ⅰ. Develop love(libidinal 'object-cathexis'):
> Boy's desires of libidinal bond with Mother >Tied to the Fixation on Mother(as the font of Love, Caring, etc) as a source of nourishment
> Parallelly, boy begins to Identify with his father, and the figure parallel to hin in terms of Biological Sex and also Identification with father's role as 'lover' of mother
> In this phase, these 2 relationships coexist in relative harmony
> Four possible 'Options' among which child can choose: 2 Subject positions: identification with father; identification with mother | 2 Choice of 'cathexis' Object: mother or father as object of libidinal investments
PhaseⅡ. Full-Blown Oedipal Complex
Two Forms of Manifestations:
Positive/True VS Negative/False
Positive Transition Pattern(True for Male)
Boys: The intensification in the boy's affections for his mother ultimately became so powerful that the boy begins to see the father, the love -object of the mother, as an obstacle and a rival -----True Oedipal Conflict:①Hostility towards father, culminating in a desire to get rid of him, to kill him ②To take father's place as an object of affection for mother ③ Never COMPLETELY hostile; boy continues to identify with father's role as 'lover' of the mother, yet not replaced by(as in Phase Ⅰ) but Supplemented by feelings of rivalry and hostility.
-------①②③leads to----->profound Ambivalence(mixed feelings, contradictory ideas)===='Positive' Oedipal complex in 'Normal' psycho-sexual development of a boy----leads to----->'Masculinization' of a boy
Girls: can follow this pattern as 'False' for them, which results in 'Lesbian' or 'Bisexual' sexual identity & affectionate attachment orientation
Negative Oedipus Complex (Female Model)
Girls: Libidinal investments in the father as an Object; assume the subject-position of the mother, taking an affectionate, 'feminine' attitude toward father ---results in---> JEALOUSY and HOSTILITY toward mother
Boys: can also follow this negative pattern==exhibit 'girl alike' behaviors: assume the subject-position of mother, an affectionate &feminine attitude toward father(instead of feeling ambivalence)---develops into---> JEALOUSY or even HOSTILITY toward mother ---leads to--->Homosexuality(According to Freud, nothing to do with biology -Genes or Hormonal Abnormality neither by science)
Freud's Theoretical Hypothesis
Each child is born with 'Gender Neutral', so-called 'CONSTITUTIONAL BISEXUALITY'----as the root cause for the potential to pursue either path----until during the psychosexual development of phallic stage one gets to choose which pattern to follow, particularly which subject position to assume as well as which object one's libido is invested, plus how completely ambivalence is transitioned and developed, determining the future sexual identity of the child.
Phase Ⅲ. Dissolution of Oedipal Complex
Ultimate Psycho-Change State of Psychosexual Development
Healthy Evolution of Dissolved or Destroyed Oedipal Complex
Results in:
- Son now identifies with the father -no longer views him as a rival
- Son develops 'affection' for, NOT 'libidinal attraction' to mother as the sexual libido directed toward mother was 'aim-inhibited' and thereafter SUBLIMATED into 'non-sexual affection'.
- Son seeks a female(sexual) partner other than the mother as wife for resolving this conflict
*** Note: Merely repressed oedipal complex will lead to Abnormal Sexual Development.
