• Milestones Achieved

    • Incest taboo established
    • Super-Ego created
    • 'Libidinal attachment' to mother is SUBLIMATED into 'Sexual Attraction' for other women as Substitute
    • Child successfully REPLICATES/REPRODUCES(Not 'imitate') the father/mother relationship
  • Emergence of Super-Ego

    A. Birth of Super-Ego

The supere-ego is BORN at the moment the Oedipus complex is dissolved, deem as a milestone of the incest conflict is resolved.

    B. What is Super-Ego?

    > the moral conscience, self-discipline mechanism, operated by producing a sense of GUILT

    > Formed by a process called 'Introjection' = the Internalization of parental, especially Paternal Authority --is assimilated by the son into his own psychic constitution(likewise, maternal authority to girls)

    >A form of mimesis, imitation of the father; but this imitation also caries with it the prohibition of being exactly like the father --- Father imitated generically, but not individually

    C. Consequences of Creation of Super-Ego

    > Super-ego is the source of religious feelings; for Freud 'God' is a substitute of superego.

    > Super-ego forms the basis of social bonding(Birds of A Feather|Like attracts like):

    -- Common Disciplinary rules;

--Not similar 'Egos' but similar 'Super-egos' form Sense of Community

--'Culture, Faith &Values' as Shared Sense of Discipline & Community

    > Super-Ego is allied ith the ID/Ego, which remaps the conflictual terrain of the psyche.

--The ID-Ego conflicts that shaped early development of the child mind are compromised to Ego-SuperEgo conflicts

--A demand call by instinct to meet 'Pleasure Principle' (from ID/SELF), not only requires to meet 'call for Reality Principle'(from EGO), but also to meet 'call for Renunciation;(from SuperEGO)

    > Shift in Psychoanalytic theory from ID-Analysis(libido drives&instincts) to EGO-Analysis(semi-conscious operations in the psyche)

    > Displacement of primal conflicts to a 'Higher' terrain; Struggle of Individual becomes a Cultural or Communal sublimation
